The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 109 DURELL, Frederick Paul WWII Frederick was born on April 19, 1921 and enlisted in the Air Force on March 13, 1942 serving in Canada, England and North Africa. He took his training in St. Thomas, Ontario and was posted to 424 Squadron Bomber Command. He was discharged on September 6, 1945 and farmed until his retirement. EARL, Russell Spencer WWII Russell was born on the family farm by Roche Percee, SK in 1923. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, and from May 30, 1944 to October 14, 1944, he was with #6 Bomber Command, 424 Squadron in England. His rank was Flying Officer. He flew thirty-five missions as the pilot of a Halifax bomber. After thirty missions, he received the Distinguished Flying Cross. After the war, he joined Canada Immigration at North Portal, SK. ECKERT, Benjamin Richard “Ben” WWII Ben was born in Carlyle, SK. He joined the Canadian Army and went overseas and served in Europe as a member of the 8th Reconnaissance Unit. Because of his ability to speak German, he was sent to the front to spy and listen to the conversations of the German soldiers. After a period of time, Ben was transferred back to Canada to the Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry. He would never talk about his war experiences but probably experienced many horrid incidents. ECKERT, Arthur WWII Art was born in Carlyle, SK. He joined the Regina Rifles and was sent to England by boat and was stationed there for a short time before being sent to the European Theatre. A couple of weeks before the war ended, he was pinned down by a sniper. He was in waist high cold water when attacked. He survived, but stayed in the water all night. His company was getting some well-deserved rest in a hayloft when they received news that the war was over. They were sent home on the Queen Elizabeth II.
