Military Service Recognition Book Volume XII 384 ONTARIO COMMAND WITZKE, Herbert Eric Herbert was born in Pogranicze, Poland on August 31, 1924. He enlisted in the Canadian Army in November 1943 and served in Canada, England, Holland and Brussels duringWorldWar II. His classification was Rifleman with the Occupation Force. Since he could speak German, the army would get him to go to the houses and ask about billeting men. He was discharged in June 1946. He was a 35-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Chesley Branch 144. Herbert passed away on December 26, 2003. WOELFLE, John Martin John was born in Scone on January 4, 1894. He enlisted in the Army on April 19, 1916, and served with the 160th Bruce Battalion A Company in Canada, England and France during World War I. He was injured by a gunshot wound in the right forearm on January 10, 1918. He was then demobilized as unfit for service and discharged on October 24, 1919. John passed away on July 8, 1965. WOJTAS, Zygmunt Zygmunt was born on August 13, 1923, in Sitowice, Poland. On February 10, 1940, Zygmunt and his family were deported by the Soviets to Siberia. After Germany attacked Russia, the Soviets allowed General Władyslaw Anders to establish a Polish Army. Zygmunt joined Ander’s Polish 2nd Corps on September 25, 1941 and was sent to Iraq to train for the infantry. He was subsequently trained as a driver and posted to the 5th Kresowy Light Anti-Aircraft Artillery. In March 1944, the 2nd Corps was sent to the front at Monte Cassino. After several failed attempts by other allied forces, the Poles ultimately defeated the Germans at Monte Cassino. Zygmunt was discharged on November 20, 1946 and shortly after immigrated to Canada eventually settling in St. Catharines, ON. For his service with the 2nd Corps he was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, Italy Star, the Defence Medal andWar Medal 1939-1945, PolishArmy Medal &Monte Cassino Cross #23500. In 2012, for his efforts during World War II, Zygmunt was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant by the Polish Consulate. He was a 67-year Life Member of Polish Branch 418 of The Royal Canadian Legion serving as President in 1965. Zygmunt passed away on June 18, 2018.
