505 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SPENCER, Alfred B. Alfred was born in New Liskeard, Ontario on November 11, 1921. He enlisted in the Army on September 15, 1942 and served with the 75th Medium Regiment Platoon RCASC attached to the 81st Canadian Artillery Co. in Italy, Holland and Germany during World War II. Their main job in action was to service the Artillery Company with ammunition and if the trucks were out of action, they got replacement at General Transport. They got shelled but he was very lucky and was never wounded. Alfred was discharged on January 4, 1946. Alfred has been a member of New Liskeard Legion Branch 33 for 68 years. ST. THOMAS, John W. John was born in Port Colborne, Ontario on January 19, 1923. He enlisted in the Navy in 1939 and served on a Skeena Destroyer Escort on the English Channel during World War II. He also served in Canada and Iceland. John was aboard the HMCS Skeena #159 until the end. She went down off the coast of Iceland. There were 15 souls lost; John was one of the lucky ones. There is a cemetery for them in Reykjavik, Iceland. John received a plaque from the City of Port Colborne for his service during the war. He was discharged in 1945. He was a member of Welland Legion Branch 4. John passed away in 2000. SPINKS, Leonard Minifer Leonard was born on April 5, 1926 in Almonte, Ontario and lived in Appleton Village. He enlisted in the Army on September 20, 1944 and received his basic and advanced training with the Toronto Scottish Regiment. He transferred to Shilo, Manitoba to First Airborne Battalion then to Fort Benny, Georgia, USA for graduation. Returning after an injury to his leg, he transferred to Kingston to Canada Provost Corps Old Fort Henry. He was a body guard for General Montgomery and also for General Kurt Myers. He spent 12 years in the reserves from 1950-1962. After his discharge on October 12, 1946 he worked for 28 years as a driver examiner with MTO in Ontario. After his retirement he took up farming beef cattle and was a stone mason. Leonard has been a member of Arnprior Legion Branch 174 for 12 years.
