Military Service Recognition Book 506 ONTARIO COMMAND STAINTHORPE, Glenn A. Glenn was born in Toronto, Ontario on January 17, 1970. He enrolled in the CF on June 1, 1988 as Infantry (RCR). After completion of Basic and Battle School Training he was posted to 3RCR in Germany. He returned to Canada in 1993 and was posted to Petawawa with the Airborne Regiment until it was disbanded in 1994. He was then posted back to 3RCR and completed tours in Cyprus, Bosnia and Afghanistan. He retired in 2012 at the rank of Sergeant. Glenn has been a member of Arnprior Legion Branch 174. STANKEVICH, Bernard “Bernie” Bernard was born in Poland on June 3, 1926. He joined the Royal Canadian Infantry on February 12, 1945 and served until January 31, 1947. Bernie was assigned to guard German prisoners of war in Smooth Rock Falls, Ontario who were providing labour for Abitibi Paper Company. Although a few Germans tried to escape, none were successful as this part of Northern Ontario, where the POW Camp was located, had plenty of snow in the winter and even more flies in the summer. All returned on their own! Bernie enlisted again on February 13, 1951 and served with the Canadian Army Reserve Forces until February 21, 1952. His areas of service included Kingston, Petawawa, Simcoe, Niagara-on-the-Lake and Smooth Rock Falls, ON. Corporal Stankevich was awarded the Canada War Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. He has been a member of Last Post Legion Branch 410 for over forty years. STAIRS, Edison Dow Edison was born in West Waterville, New Brunswick on October 16, 1924. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in September 1943. He trained as a Wireless Tech and Japanese Code Specialist in Kingston, Ontario. In early 1945, Ed was posted to Vancouver to monitor Japanese transmissions, then to Comox Control Tower in Comox, BC monitoring west coast air traffic. He was released in September 1945. Edison re-enlisted in the RCAF as a Medical Technology Specialist at Toronto in September 1949. He was posted to Chatham, NB in 1954, and then to Vancouver as Medical Unit Supervisor and promoted to Sergeant in 1958. From 1960 to 1966 he served in Winnipeg in the Aeromed Training Unit, and from 1966 to 1974 he served in Toronto at Downsview as Trade Head. Edison was discharged in 1974. He has been a Life Member of The Royal Canadian Legion, Cobden Branch 550 for 36 years.
