Military Service Recognition Book 504 ONTARIO COMMAND SMYTH, Walter R. Walter was born on June 24, 1921 at home in Robinson Township. He died April 10, 2001. Walter was in the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps during World War II and served in eight countries: England, Sicily, Italy, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, and France. Following his discharge in March 1946 in Toronto, he returned to Robinson Township, Manitoulin Island and through the Veteran’s Land Act, he purchased a farm. Walter bought a threshing machine tractor and set up a welding shop not only to benefit himself but his neighbours also. Walter helped to establish Silver Water Branch 514 of The Royal Canadian Legion, originally chartered on April 24, 1950 and was a charter member. On January 8, 1958, Silver Water Branch 514 moved to Gore Bay and became Western Manitoulin Branch 514 where Walter was a charter active member until he died in 2001. Walter was President of the Manitoulin Livestock Co-Op and served on the Board of Directors. He was a member of the Soil and Crop Cream Producers and the Cattlemen’s Associations. He served as Secretary-Treasurer for Robinson Township Telephone Company from January 20, 1958 to November 8, 1973, when it was sold to Bell Canada. He was chair of the Robinson Public School Board and the War Memorial Hall Board. Walter was an Elder beginning in 1947 and Clerk of Session in St. Andrews United Church in Silver Water. He married Miriam Donnabelle in 1966 and they had two daughters. SPEARS, William Alexander “Bill” Bill was born in Tobermory, Ontario on September 28, 1911. He enlisted in the Army in September 1939 and served with the Perth Regiment in Italy and Holland during World War II. He was discharged in July 1945 and was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and bar, the Defence Medal, the France and Germany Star, the Italy Star and the 1939-45 War Medal. After his discharge, Bill served as a Lighthouse Keeper on Flower Pot Island, Angus Island and Cove Island. He was a member of Tobermory Legion Branch 290. Bill passed away on April 19, 1995. SMYTHE, Don G. Don was born in Hamilton, Ontario on August 24, 1944. He enlisted in the Army on November 30, 1961 and served with the Canadian Provost Corps in Canada, Cyprus, Germany and Bermuda as a Peacekeeper. Don was posted to CFB Gagetown, CFB Montreal, Cyprus, CFB Soest Germany, CFB London, CFS Bermuda, and CFB Petawawa. He was awarded the Canadian Decoration, the Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medal, the Special Service Medal with NATO Bar, and the Corrections Exemplary Service Medal with Bar. He was discharged on December 25, 1981. Don has been a member of Lambeth Legion Branch 501 and St Marys Legion Branch 236 for 27 years.
