503 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SMITH, Norman A. Norman was born in Berrington Passage, Nova Scotia on August 30, 1929. He went to sea at the age of fifteen, but was sent back to school after three months returning to serve on merchant ships after leaving school. During the war, Norm served on merchant ships in at least seven convoys in the North Atlantic. After two years at sea, he attended Navigation School and received a 3 mate’s Certificate. Norm remained in the Merchant Navy from 1943 to 1948. After his discharge, he worked at Sterling Varnish in St. Catharines. Norman has been a member of The Royal Canadian Legion for 44 years. SMITH, Ronald Edward Ronald was born in St. Thomas, Ontario on March 19, 1943. He enlisted in the Army on June 5, 1959 and served with the Elgin Regiment, E & K Scot, 56 Fd Arty, RHLI, 22 SVC Bn London. He was commander of the Elgin Regiment from 1984 to 1985, Commander of the London District HQ, Commander of 22 SVC Bn from 1994-1998 and Chairman of St. John’s Ambulance. He was discharged on March 19, 1998. Ronald has been a member of Last Post Legion Branch 410 for over fifteen years. SMITH, Robert N. Robert was born in Imperial, Saskatchewan on March 29, 1919. He enlisted in the Army on October 9, 1940. He served with the Highland Light Infantry in England, France, Holland and Germany during World War II. Robert was wounded in Germany. After his discharge in 1945, he married Maxine Holbrook in 1946 and farmed in Thedford, ON until his death. Robert passed away on January 18, 2001 and is buried at the Pine Hill Cemetery.
