Military Service Recognition Book 496 ONTARIO COMMAND WEST, Frederick H. Frederick was born on May 15, 1898 in Bath, England. He immigrated to Canada under the “Home Boys” Program. He joined the Canadian Army at the age of 16 years and 8 months old and served as a Lance Corporal with the Royal Montreal Regiment, Sherbrooke Battalion. He entered the front lines just after the Battle of Vimy Ridge and remained in the front lines for the duration of World War I. He earned the Military Medal twice. He returned to Sherbrooke, QC and worked in silk mills in the area ending up at Canadian Celanese Ltd in Drummondville, QC where he worked for over 35 years before retirement. He married Elmira Glattfelter on May 17, 1927and they had three children: Norman, Fred Jr. and Frieda. He became a Life Member of The Royal Canadian Legion on April 22, 1954. He was also a member of the Masonic Order for over 70 years, as well as, the Order of the Eastern Star for 67 years and a member of the Shriners. He was instrumental in starting the Drummondville Que. Legion Branch 51. He was presented with the Legion of Honour of France at the Bowmanville, ON Branch on November 11, 1998 by French Consul-General Pierre-Jean Vandoorne. He passed away in Bowmanville on May 1, 2000. WEST, Milton “Grant” Grant was born on November 17, 1944 in Sault Ste. Marie, ON. He joined the 49th Militia in Sault Ste. Marie on June 9, 1961 and served with them until his discharge on January 24, 1963. He then joined the 6 Wings on February 14, 1963 and served until July 23, 1967. He served as a Peacekeeper and Reservist in Canada and in Europe. He received Honourable Discharge, the Service Medal and was awarded 3 years Peacekeeper in Europe. He was honourably discharged with the rank of Corporal. In civilian life, he was transport driver, Algoma District Police Constable and General Supervisor in the steel industry (A.S.C.). He is married with one daughter. WEST, James A. James was born on February 28, 1921 in Simcoe, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army on January 6, 1940. He joined the R.C.H.A. and served with them in Sicily, Holland and Europe during World War II. He was wounded in Sicily on October 15, 1944. He was discharged in 1966. He was a member of the Pt. Rowan Legion Branch 379 before he passed away on September 15, 1996.
