481 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND THOMPSON (ROOKER), Marjorie Marjorie was born on October 30, 1920 in Morse, SK. She enlisted in the Navy on August 23, 1943 and served onboard HMCS Kings in Halifax, NS and she was the first WREN Officer’s Steward to go overseas to serve on the HMCS Niobe stationed at Greenock, Scotland C/O CFMO Glasgow where she met and married John W. Thompson who was also serving in the Navy. She served during World War II until her discharge on November 16, 1945. She is a member of the Port Rowan Legion Branch 379 and has been for 28 years. THOMSON, Purves R. Purves was born on July 9, 1896 in West Nissouri Township, ON. He served with the Army in Canada during World War I. He was never sent overseas due to the medical doctor detecting a small goiter that never affected his life. Upon his discharge from the Army on July 7, 1918, he returned to his West Nissouri family home. In around 1920 he purchased a farm in Blanshard Township, Perth County. He gave his army bag, shoes, puttees, pay book, stiff brush, a can of Brasso polish, and his buttons and badges from his uniform to his grandson, W. Gary Urquhart, a few years before his death. These items are treasured by Gary. Purves passed away on November 9, 1988. THOMSON, Alex B. Alex was born on July 25, 1917 in Townsend Township, ON. He enlisted in the Army with the C.A.C. on August 5, 1942. He was stationed in Toronto and Camp Borden during World War II. After his discharge on June 13, 1944, he returned to Norfolk County to work and raise his family. He spent a great part of his civilian life in community and volunteer work. He was a driver for both the Canadian Cancer Society and Senior Support Services in his later years. Alex is a Life Member of the Waterford Legion Branch 123 and has been a member for 39 years. In 2013, he was awarded the prestigious Meritorious Service Medal in recognition of his many years of dedication and service.
