Military Service Recognition Book 480 ONTARIO COMMAND THOMPSON (CASSON), Alfreda K. Alfreda was born on September 4, 1924 in Findlay, MB. She enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy (WRNA) in December of 1942 and served in Canada during World War II. Upon her completion of her military service, she worked her entire post-war years in Kapuskasing where she still resides. THOMPSON, Edward L. Edward was born on January 17, 1925 in Bethune Township, ON. He enlisted in the Army with the Third Army 69th Battery on March 2, 1943. He served in England, Holland and Belgium during World War II. While walking into a town in Holland, a Dutch family invited him to dinner (he went back a few times). This man was a railroad engineer and worked for whoever controlled the railroad throughout the war. At the end of the war, one of Ed’s jobs was moving German equipment about twenty miles to a railroad siding, which included a couple of hundred bicycles. Bicycles were the main mode of transportation in Holland. He made sure that the bikes ‘fell’ off the load and into the hands of the Dutch people along the way before reaching the railroad siding. Over fifty years later, Ed met a neighbour who said that he was supposed to load these bikes onto the train. THOMPSON, Allen Harvey Allen was born on September 9, 1937 in Niagara Falls, ON. He enlisted in the Air Force in November of 1955. He was the personal driver to the Canadian General in residence in the Netherlands. He served from the East to the West coast of Canada, England, Germany and Holland. In his capacity as professional driver, he drove the Prime minister of Canada and the Royal Family. His medals consist of the Service Medal and Bar, the Allied Forces Central Europe and the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medals. After retirement from the service, he was with the Niagara Parks Commission for 19 years. Allen passed away on December 30, 2011.
