479 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND THERIAULT, Edward J. Edward was born in Grande-Anse, Gloucester County, NB on February 19, 1921. He enlisted in the Army on January 17, 1942 and served with the Canadian Infantry “D” Company in Canada, the United Kingdom and Continental Europe during World War II. He was severely injured when a fellow soldier jumped out of their lorry, tripped and fell, pulling the trigger on his loaded sten and struck Ed in the shoulder. This marked the end of the war for Ed. He was discharged on December 8, 1944. For his service, he received the 1939 – 1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and the War Medal 1939 – 1945. He was a member of the Legion Branch 85 for 30 years. Edward passed away on June 27, 2002. THOMAS, John L. John was born on December 10, 1920 in Whitby, ON. He was a veteran of World War II. He served during the war with the Royal Canadian Artillery from 1943 to 1946. His tour of duty took him to England, France, Belgium and Holland. In June of 1944, while on route to Europe, his troop ship hit a mine in the English Channel. Breaking apart, the ship was sinking quickly. Being a strong swimmer, he managed to save himself and many non-swimmers by using the ship debris to stay afloat. He was in the frigid waters of the channel for many hours and a passing trawler rescued the survivors. Upon his discharge from the army, John returned to his hometown of Whitby, becoming a stonemason in the community. A lifelong resident of Whitby, John passed away in his 82nd year. He was a member of the Legion Branch 112 in Whitby, ON. John passed away on October 2, 2002. THERRIAULT, Arthur M. Arthur was born on November 11, 1923 in Chapleau, ON. He served with the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve in Canada, on the High Seas and in Britain after enlisting on June 4, 1941. He was honourably discharged on October 13, 1945 with the rank of Leading Stoker. For his service, he was awarded the 1939-45 Star, Atlantic Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and the War Medal 193945. He has been a member of the Chapleau Legion Branch for 28 and the Waterloo/Elmira Legion Branch for 35 years.
