Military Service Recognition Book 460 ONTARIO COMMAND SMITH, William William was born on July 21, 1918 in Scotland. He enlisted in the Army in 1941 and served as a Craftsman with the Royal Canadian Electrical Mechanical Engineers in England and Europe. William was discharged in 1946. SMYTH, Charles H. Charles was born on September 21, 1917 in Silver Water, Manitoulin Isles. He enlisted in the Army on January 16, 1942. He served in the Central Mediterranean and in the U.K. during World War II. He contacted T.B. of the kidneys which left him in ill health for the rest of his life. He is a member of the Legion Branch 514. SMITHERMAN, James James was born on September 17, 1924 in Toronto, ON. He enlisted on June 15, 1942 at the age of seventeen. He served for three and a half years on three ships: HMCS Regina Corvette on the Triangle Run, HMCS Bittersweet in Newfoundland. He recalled being part of a convoy of 160 ships stretching 12 miles wide from St. Johns to Londonderry. He also served on the HMCS Fort William as a minesweeper sweeping mines in the English Channel. He earned the North Atlantic Star, 1939 – 1945 Star, 1939 – 1945 War Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. He suffered a broken leg and hearing loss from mine depth charges. After the war, he did many different things like working for T.T.C Toronto, farming, working at General Motors as well as working maintenance and custodial services in eight schools. He retired in Port Perry. He is now 89 years old and still likes to dance.
