455 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SMITH, Fred Fred was born in Widdifield Township on April 7, 1920. He served in Canada and in Jamaica during World War II after joining the Brockville Rifles in March of 1943. He was stationed most of the time in Jamaica as a guard at the center for prisoners of war. After the war, he became a farmer and worked at RCA. Fred had three sons: two born before the war, one during and had two daughters born after the war. He had been a member of the Chesley Legion Branch 144 for five years. Fred passed away on April 24, 1997. SMITH, Herbert A. Herbert was born on September 11, 1922 in Edmonton, AB. He served in England and in Canada with the 158 Squadron of the RCAF during World War II. He flew sixteen missions navigator on Halifax bombers. He was discharged in 1945. In civilian life, he entered the teaching profession and retired as the principal of Chesley District High School. He resides with his wife Eleanor in Hanover. He has been a member of the Hanover Legion Branch 130 for 15 years. SMITH, Frederick H. Frederick was born on December 8, 1917 in Inverhuron, ON. He served in Canada, Continental Europe, Central Mediterranean Area, France, Italy and Holland with the 19th Regiment during World War II after enlisting in the Army on April 4, 1941. He was wounded in the leg and returned to the farm on the 10th of Kincardine after being discharged and he also worked for the department of highways until his retirement. He was a member of the Kincardine Legion Branch 183. Frederick passed away on December 21, 1990.
