Military Service Recognition Book 456 ONTARIO COMMAND SMITH, Hubert T. J. Hubert was born on July 28, 1928 in Sault Ste-Marie, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army Militia on June 15, 1945 and served with the Sault-Sudbury Regiment in Canada during World War II. He had attempted to enlist in the Regular Army (active service) but was rejected as being too young. He was discharged on May 14, 1947. SMITH, John “Jack” Jack was born on September 21, 1902 in Glasgow, Scotland. He joined the Canadian Active Service Force with the No.1 District Depot in London, Ontario in July of 1940. In addition to his normal duties with the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, he also drove an ambulance during the War. He was twice wounded while serving overseas. Jack was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He was the father of Kenneth J. Smith of St. Mary’s. He was a member of the Ambassador Legion Branch 143 for 27 years before he passed away on December 8, 1972. SMITH, James James was born on December 11, 1895 in Tarves, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. He enlisted in the Army on March 22, 1916 in Moose Jaw, SK. He served with the rank of Private with the 203rd Overseas Battalion in France during World War I. James also spent 4 months with the 44th Battalion. He was sent to England on November 5, 1916 and France on April 15, 1917. James was wounded by shrapnel on both legs on June 3, 1917 and had his right leg amputated the next day. He was entitled to wear 1 Gold Casualty Stripe on June 3, 1917. He was a bank manager from 1939 – 1952 in civilian life. James passed away in February of 1957.
