447 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SERGEANT, James L. James was born on September 30, 1923 in Tillsonburg, ON. Flying Officer Jim Sergeant wanted to serve in the Royal Canadian Navy. Due to the long waiting list, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in November of 1942 instead and he became a Navigator before going overseas in 1944. He flew seventeen operational missions with No. 1 Bomber Group’s 103 Sqn RAF ElshamWolds and 166 Sqn RAF Kirmington. His last operational mission was to bomb the SS barracks at Berchtesgaden. At the end of the war, Jim was posted to No. 6 RCAF Bomber Group at RAF Leeming in North Yorkshire where he flew presence flights over Germany, prisoners of war exchange flights to Italy, and dumped munitions in the sea. He demobilized on July 1, 1946. Jim built a career in the shoe industry and played an active leadership role in his church, Scouting, the Orange Lodge, Rotary – as a Paul Harris Fellow, and with the Canadian charity “Sleeping Children Around the World”. James passed away on November 10, 2013. SERGEANT, Samuel Samuel was born on November 19, 1891 in Ireland. Acting Bombardier Samuel Sergeant emigrated from Ireland in 1912. In November of 1914, he joined the 5th Field Ambulance Group. After his basic training at Exhibition Park, Toronto, he shipped overseas on April 18, 1915 as part of the Canadian Expeditionary Force arriving in Ypres, France on September 15. Samuel won the Military Medal (MM) for bravery under fire at Vimy Ridge and was mentioned in the London Gazette on July 7, 1917. At the conclusion of World War I, he was stationed in Aachen, Germany as part of the occupation forces. He demobilized on July 9, 1919 and started a career in the shoe industry. He was a founding member of the Tillsonburg Legion Branch 153 in 1929 and was its president in 1932. He also played active leadership roles in his church, Scouting, the Orange Lodge and as Trustee of the Tillsonburg Public School Board for 32 years. Samuel passed away on November 19, 1977. SERGEANT, Monika T. Monika was born on February 29, 1952 in Heidingsfeld, Bavaria, West Germany. She joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1975 as a Registered Nurse after having worked at Toronto Sick Kids Hospital and Toronto General Hospital. During her 9 year career, she was stationed at HMCS Stadacona, CFB Chatham, and CFB Greenwood. She specialized as an AirEvac Nurse and took part in several NATO exercises that reinforced NATO’s northern flank as well as helped to AirEvac the Vietnamese boat People from Hong Kong to Canada in 1979. She was discharged on June 12, 1984.
