439 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND RUSSELL, Loyal Patrick Loyal was born on March 14, 1945 in Hamilton, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army on March 14, 1962. He served with the 2 RCR, 2 Airborne, Cdn AB Regiment, RCAMC in Cyprus and Canada during Peacetime. Loyal was discharged on March 14, 2010 and now works with the Corps of Commissionaires as a Ranger Control in CFB Borden. He has been a member of the Legion Branch 329 for thirty-three years. RUTHERFORD, Gordon H. Gordon was born in Blenheim, Ontario on September 1, 1898. He joined the Canadian Army when he was 16 years old. He celebrated his 17th birthday with his doctor brother in England. At only 18 years of age, as a gunner in the Canadian Expeditionary Force, he was chosen to represent the Canadian Army at the final battle fought by the British near the city of Mons. Gordon returned to Canada and enrolled in medical school at the University of Toronto. After graduation, he set up practice in Chatham, Ontario. After a very sudden and unexpected illness, he passed away in 1932. Over four hundred people from the Blenheim area attended his funeral including over forty Legion members from the Blenheim Branch. Years later, his son related that is was the horrors witnessed at Passchendale that led to his father’s early death. RUTHERFORD, Donald Donald was born near Sarnia, Ontario in 1922 and never forgot his roots in Blenheim, Ontario. As a young Sea Cadet, age 18, Donald left home for England and joined the Royal Navy. When War was declared, he transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy. He served aboard the British ships: HMS Hood (fortunately he was transferred off prior to its final departure), HMS London, HMS Duke of York and HMS Woolston. When in the RCN, he served aboard HMCS Ottawa before it was torpedoed and sunk and HMCS Prince Robert. He was a member of the Canadian Joint Staff in Washington, D.C. and a member of the Naval Staff College in Greenwich, England. Donald was also Director of Naval Operational Communications Command before retiring from the Navy in 1968. He was Captain of HMCS Haida and HMCS St. Croix 1962 – 1964. Upon retirement, he held the rank of Commander and joined the 3M Company in London, Ontario. He passed away on October 4, 2004.
