Military Service Recognition Book 438 ONTARIO COMMAND ROY, Bernard R. Bernard was born on August 8, 1916. He enlisted in the Army in 1941. He served in the Air Force during World War II until his discharge in 1944. Bernard was an electrician by trade and that is what he did in the Air Force. When he was discharged, he was mayor or Reeve of Sandwich East. Bernard was a member of the Belle River Legion Branch 399 and the Essex Legion Branch 201. He passed away on October 11, 2012. RUMMERFIELD, John John was born in 1859 in Wallace Township, Perth County. His parents were Solomon Rummerfield and Margaret Jean Sweeton. His grandfather was a rebel in the 1837 Rebellion. He was charged with high treason and spent 4 months in Kingston Penitentiary. Rummerfield, PA, USA was named after John’s great-grandfather, Anthony. In 1803, Anthony was the first Town Warden for today’s Ajax, Ontario area. John enlisted in the North West Mounted Police on April 24, 1883. He was stationed at Fort Carlton and Fort Battleford. Cst. John died on August 22, 1886 of typhomalarial fever and is buried in the North West Mounted Police Cemetery near Fort Battleford, Saskatchewan. Cst. John Rummerfield was awarded the Louis Riel Rebellion Medal and the medal is on display at the Mounted Police Heritage Center in Regina, Saskatchewan. RUMFORD, Clayton C. Clayton was born on March 21, 1914 in Orillia, Ontario. He joined the R.C.E.M.E. on August 17, 1942. He served in Italy, France, Holland and Germany during World War II. He was in Holland during the Liberation. Discussing the April 26th entrance into Apeldoorn with his son-in-law, he remarked that he “wasn’t with the ‘gunners and glory boys’ when they marched through with the RCEME (greasers as he called them). Young girls were throwing themselves at the soldier boys. I was glad I was married with a daughter at home even though I had never seen the child, I remember this day as it was my wedding anniversary…” Clayton returned home to Canada to his wife and two-and-a-half year old daughter. He passed away on December 30, 2001.
