Military Service Recognition Book 440 ONTARIO COMMAND SABOURIN, Xavier F. Xavier was born on October 12, 1908 in Maxville, ON. He enlisted in the Army on September 5, 1939. He joined the Army Service Corps in the active and regular forces and served in Canada, Britain, Central Mediterranean Area and Northwest Europe during World War II. For his service, he was awarded the 1939 – 1945 Star, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and the War Medal 1939 – 1945. Xavier passed away in December of 1957. SAMPSON, Steven Steven was born in Sheshegwaning, ON in 1916. He served in the Army during World War II. After his return from war, Steven was able to finish building a boat his father, Joseph, was building before he passed away. Joseph’s workshop was located where Frank Cada’s home currently sits in the subdivision of Sheshegwaning’s main village. He was a logger and boat builder. Steven died from drowning on June 12, 1949 while working for KVP Forestry. He has no Veteran stone. SAMPSON, Daniel Daniel was born on November 24, 1894 in Sheshegwaning, ON. He served with the Canadian Forestry Corps during World War II. His first wife, Phillomine Debassige died at an early age and he re-married to Angeline Neganiwina on May 5, 1964. He had one child. Every spring, Daniel made maple syrup. He died of cancer before he could finish building his new home after his house burnt down. He played the organ at church and owned his own and he also played a horn. He was Chief of Sheshegwaning in 1938 to 1941 and then elected as councillor in 1953 to 1955. He was re-elected as Chief on April 15, 1964 to June 26, 1964 but was unable to serve his term because of his illness. He is buried in the Roman Catholic Cemetery in Sheshegwaning, ON and he has a Veteran Stone in Sheshegwaning. His medals were burnt in a house fire.
