429 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND REID, Ken D. Ken was born in Guilford, Surrey, England on October 15, 1925. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force on July 7, 1943 at the age of seventeen. He had to get an OK from his mother as his father, Hector Reid, was already overseas serving as a Sergeant in the Provost Corps. He was sent to England after Bombing and Gunnery School in PEI with the rank of Sergeant. In time, he joined the #420 Squadron in Yorkshire, England. He was shot down on January 16, 1945 and taken as a POW. He returned to England on May 11, 1945 and returned to Canada as a Flight Sergeant. He received Commission as a Pilot Officer on return to Canada. After rehab training and education, he rejoined the RCAF. There were no air gunners in peacetime so he resigned commission and became LAC under training as a Communications Operator, serving in Whitehorse, Zweibruken, Germany, Trenton and Ottawa. While in Ottawa, he engaged in Operations SHORAN, the aerial mapping of Northern Ontario, the Western Provinces, the Yukon, the NWTS and Arctic Islands. He was awarded the 1939-45 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Voluntary Service Medal and Clasp, War Medal 1939-45, Canadian Forces Decoration and Clasp. His last six years in peacetime service was in communications at the Diefenbunker in Carp, Ontario. It is now a tourist site. He retired from military service on October 15, 1975. RELES, Leonard B. Leonard was born on January 10, 1921 in Calder, Saskatchewan. He enlisted in the Army on January 20, 1943. Achieving the rank of Corporal in the Infantry, Leonard served in Canada during World War II. He was a member of the Port Colborne Legion Branch 56 for more than fifty years until he passed away on January 30, 2006. REID, Robert A. Robert was born on August 12, 1925 in Montreal, Quebec. He enlisted in the Army with the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion in March of 1942. While serving during World War II, Robert was shot in the left shoulder. He was discharged in August of 1945. Robert is a Life Member of the Newmarket Legion Branch 426.
