Military Service Recognition Book 428 ONTARIO COMMAND REDMOND, Mervin H. Mervin was born on August 20, 1924 in Chesley, ON. He served as Signalman on the 4-stacker H.M.S. Richmond for eight months on different Atlantic routes. When the Richmond was decommissioned, he worked as Signalman on the freighter that took him to London, England. He was sent to Southampton to a 12-boat Landing Craft Flotilla for three months training. D-Day Landing: At 0700 hours on June 6, Mervin was in the lead boat of his LCI Flotilla and got the signal from the mother ship: “Have a go, Canada”. The channel was very rough; the 275 soldiers onboard were very seasick and glad to get off the boat. For two months, his boat hauled men and supplies from England to Normandy. They were once attacked by four aircrafts. Their ack-ack shot down two of the planes. Mervin volunteered for the Pacific. He passed the Signalman T.O. course and was to go on an aircraft carrier but the War ended first. Mervin is a member of the Chesley Legion Branch 144. REID, John R. “Jack” John was born on April 28, 1925 in Toronto, Ontario. He enlisted in the Navy on October 10, 1943. He served on the HMCS Longueil in the North Atlantic and Convoy Escort to Britain. He was in the Reserve Army from 1941 to 1942 and the 2nd BN Irish Regiment of Canada. He trained at Niagara-on-the-Lake and joined the Navy at HMCS York. He was active on December 7, 1943 and was on HMCS Longeuil from 1944 to 1945 and on HMCS Bellechasse in July and August of 1945 in Esquimalt, British Colombia. He has been a member of The Royal Canadian Legion for 7 years. REED, Norman L. Norman was born on November 30, 1920 in Fergus, ON. He enlisted in the Air Force on October 9, 1941. He served as a Flight Sargent and a Navigator with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He served in Canada, England and did missions over Germany. He was reported missing on an operational flight over Manneheim in a Halifax Bomber. Four of the crew were lost and the pilot was taken as a prisoner of war. He was killed in action in 1943 in Germany. He is buried in the British Military Cemetery in Germany.
