William Herbert Brown was born in 1886 in Rossburn. He married Hellen Halliday in Vista in 1916. He did his part during World War II by working at the prisoner of war camp at Whitewater Lake in Riding Mountain National Park. Hellen died in May of 1946 and William in November of 1964. A first son, Robert was born in 1916, joined the Artillery in 1939, and went overseas in 1940. He married an Irish girl, Nora Ryan in 1941 and served in Africa, Italy, Holland and Germany. They returned to Canada after the war in 1945 and settled in Rivers. They had 3 children, Patricia, Kevin and Kerri. Nora died in 1980. Robert later married Mary Longmire. He died in 1991. A second son, Wilfred was born in 1919, and joined the same unit as his brother Robert in 1939 and went overseas in 1940. He also served in Africa, Italy, Holland and Germany. He married Joan Beaumont in England in 1943. They also returned to Canada in 1945 and farmed south of Vista for a few years, then moved to Brandon, and later to Alexander. They had 3 children, Douglas, Howard and Sandra. Wilfred died in 1992 and Joan in 1997. A third son, Elmer was born in 1921. He joined the Lake Superior Regiment in 1940 and went overseas in 1942. He served in France, Germany, Belgium and Holland and returned home in January of 1946. He married Sylvia Carson in 1947. They lived in Atikokan, Ontario before returning to their Rossburn farm in 1960. They had 4 children, Marlaine, Brian, Russell and Mariellen. Elmer died in April of 2001. Sylvia still lives on the family farm. Their daughter, Christy was born in 1925. She joined the Women’s Royal Naval Service during the war and was stationed in Halifax. She was an excellent athlete, played goal for the Wrens hockey team and she was the catcher for the softball team. She married Frank Robinson in 1948 and they had 6 children, Bruce, Sharon, Frances, Lyle, Colleen and Leslie. Frank died in 2000, Christy in 2001.
