9 2019 Dear Friends: I would like to extend my warmest greetings to the readers of the Military Service Recognition Book 2019. This annual publication pays tribute to the brave men and women who answered the call to serve and fought to keep our nation strong and free. This collection of stories gives readers an opportunity to learn more about Canadian Veterans, and to honour those who stood on guard for us and the values we hold dear. I would like to commend everyone involved with this publication for their hard work and dedication to preserving these memories for generations to come. I would also like to take this opportunity to recognize our Veterans and our serving members, who have made, and continue to make, extraordinary sacrifices to uphold the fundamental principles of freedom, democracy and justice. 13 A Message from the Lieutenant Governor As Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, it is my great honour to contribute to this year’s edition of the British Columbia/Yukon Command Military Service Recognition Book. The preservation of the histories of those who have served in the Armed Forces is vital; the fact that this annual publication accepts stories from all veterans, service personnel, relatives and friends is also important. Even the most humble biography is worth sharing— these experiences expose us to the service and sacrifice of our veterans and remind us that those who serve come from a diverse array of Canadians. Any loss of Canadian lives while in service is a stark reminder of the great cost of defending our values and freedoms and protecting the most vulnerable. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all active and retired members of Canada’s Armed Forces for their service, courage and dedication, and for the sacrifices that they and their families have made. The stories in this book represent this commitment to duty, whether that be in wartime or as peacekeepers. On behalf of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and all British Columbians, I would like to recognize the work of the Legion. Your leadership in supporting our veterans, the Canadian Forces and their families— not only in telling their stories, but with health, social and educational programs and community services— is a most worthy cause. Sincerely, The Honourable Janet Austin, OBC Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia

15 A MESSAGE FROM PREMIER JOHN HORGAN As Premier of the Province of British Columbia, I am honoured to welcome readers to the 14th annual Military Service Recognition Book published by the BC/Yukon Command of the Royal Canadian Legion. Each year, this publication recognizes the dedicated service of our veterans and military personnel by offering readers the privilege of exploring some of their extraordinary stories. The 2019 edition also commemorates the 75th anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy, one of Canada’s greatest contributions in terms of protecting and promoting democracy, liberty and freedom. On this important anniversary, I was humbled to attend ceremonies on Juno Beach and pay tribute to the brave Canadians whose selfless actions allowed us the rights and freedoms we know today. Remembering our past with deep gratitude for those who served our country and liberated our allies from tyranny is fundamental to our future. I want to thank you for honouring the legacies in these pages. Building a more peaceful and tolerant world begins with respectfully acknowledging and learning from our history, and the sacrifices made by all our veterans must never be forgotten, as we all commit to upholding the values of peace and freedom. HONOURABLE JOHN HORGAN PREMIER OF BRITISH COLUMBIA

Military Service Recognition Book 40 Granada Gold (TSXV: GGM) owns the past-producing Granada Gold Mine located 5 km south of the historic mining community of Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec. It is situated on the prolific Cadillac Trend in the Abitibi Region where numerous gold mines continue to operate. The area has produced over 50 million ounces of gold in the past 100 years. The Granada mine produced gold in the 1930s but mining stopped when fire destroyed the surface structures. The company acquired the property in 2006 and since then has completed extensive development towards its goal of producing 100,000 ounces of gold per year. A 1.2 million ounce gold resource has been established based on 125,000 metres of drilling to date. With planned infill drilling it is anticipated the gold resource could increase significantly. Additional plans are to commence mining the fully permitted 75,000 ounces of near surface 4.2 g/t gold ore as soon as a local mill enters into an agreement to process the ore. For further information, please see the investor fact sheet and corporate presentation at the company's website at www.granadagoldmine.com. 133 Growing up in Powell River, like most small communities, it wasn’t surprising that the Legion was not only in the centre of town but that it was also the centre of our community. The Legion sold poppies during Remembrance Day and did pancake breakfasts during Sea Fair Days. They sponsored a number of sports teams of which by husband and many others played for. The Powell River Legion was always giving back to the community. Our dad was the pipe major of the Powell River Pipe Band and a legion member. He and his band mates frequently visited the Legion, so it was fitting when he and our mom passed away that we would have their celebration of life ceremonies at that Legion. I never would have imagined how my younger years growing up with the Legion would circle back into my life in my darkest days. Fast forward 20 years, and I was diagnosed with stage 4 malignant melanoma and would be given 3 – 6 months to live. Friends and Family rallied around me. I had 4 surgeries, 4 treatments and in 2007, I was free of cancer. Our family knew how lucky we had been and wanted to play it forward so we created a not-for-profit called Save Your Skin Foundation. Our mission was to help others that were in a similar situation and to get patients the support they needed, but we needed to raise funds to get started. It was during this time that the Legion came back into our lives. The North Vancouver Legion offered to do a fundraiser for our organization and it was a huge success. We raised closed to $15,000 dollars but it didn’t stop there. We got to take part in meat draws throughout the year and hold yet another fundraiser the next year. Save Your Skin Foundation has grown across the globe and has helped hundreds of patients with their melanoma journey. We could never have done it without the support of the Legion. We as a family will be forever grateful and cannot understate what the Legion has done for melanoma patients not only in BC, but across the country. “Together We Can Make A Difference” Thank You to the Legion, for your generous support. - Kathleen Barnard, Melanoma Survivor and Founder of Save Your Skin Foundation
