13 A Message from the Lieutenant Governor As Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, it is my great honour to contribute to this year’s edition of the British Columbia/Yukon Command Military Service Recognition Book. The preservation of the histories of those who have served in the Armed Forces is vital; the fact that this annual publication accepts stories from all veterans, service personnel, relatives and friends is also important. Even the most humble biography is worth sharing— these experiences expose us to the service and sacrifice of our veterans and remind us that those who serve come from a diverse array of Canadians. Any loss of Canadian lives while in service is a stark reminder of the great cost of defending our values and freedoms and protecting the most vulnerable. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all active and retired members of Canada’s Armed Forces for their service, courage and dedication, and for the sacrifices that they and their families have made. The stories in this book represent this commitment to duty, whether that be in wartime or as peacekeepers. On behalf of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and all British Columbians, I would like to recognize the work of the Legion. Your leadership in supporting our veterans, the Canadian Forces and their families— not only in telling their stories, but with health, social and educational programs and community services— is a most worthy cause. Sincerely, The Honourable Janet Austin, OBC Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia
