LEST WE FORGET 359 WYATT, Lester William Sr. WWI &WWII Lester was born in Honiton, Devon, England, on March 30, 1887. He came to Canada and homesteaded in the area of Shell Lake, Saskatchewan, and enlisted in the 128th Battalion Canadian Expeditionary Force during World War I on January 6, 1916 and served as a Corporal in France, Belgium and Canada. He was wounded in France and received the Military Medal. He recuperated in hospital in England and was honourably discharged in July 1919. He met Elizabeth Sanford and they married in 1919, and returned to Canada in 1922. They farmed in the Boro Green area, Saskatchewan, and raised eight children. During World War II, Lester also served with the Saskatchewan Veterans Civil Security Corps to safeguard the Canadian homefront and was recognized for his service in February 1945. They moved to Canwood in 1942 and later to Vancouver in 1946. Lester passed away in Vancouver on June 29, 1955, and Elizabeth passed away in 1967. Both gave a lifetime of service to their country and communities. Lester had been a member of the Canwood Branch 132 of The Royal Canadian Legion for five years. YAKE, Ralph Archibald WWI Ralph was born in Alpena, Michigan, USA, in 1895. He joined the Regina Regiment and served in Canada. He passed away in 1972. WYATT, William Samuel “Bill” WWII Bill was born in Upottery, Devon, England, on April 2, 1921, to Lester and Elizabeth Wyatt, and came to Canada with his parents when he was only eleven months old and was raised on a farm. He started playing music at a young age and mastered many instruments. He enlisted in 19th Field Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery, 63rd Battery and served in France on D-Day, Belgium, Holland, Germany, England and Canada. As a signalman, he was privy to information as to what was happening and was often at the frontlines to ensure that communications were maintained. He was honourably discharged on February 4, 1946 and returned to Canada, settling in the Polwarth, Saskatchewan, area. He married Margaret Aiken and they farmed and raised a family of three children. Bill and Margaret retired to Canwood, Saskatchewan, in 1986, but continued to be active on the farm until Bill’s passing on March 31, 2002. He is remembered for a lifetime of community service and entertaining. He had been a Life Member of the Canwood Branch 132 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 55 years.
