LEST WE FORGET 309 SWANSTON, Ernie WWI & BOERWAR Ernie joined the Lord Strathcona Horse Regiment in 1899 in the Boer War, and the 5th Battalion in 1914 in World War I. He was discharged in April 1919 after serving four years overseas. TAIT, William McMurray “Bill” WWII Bill was born in MacDowall, Saskatchewan, in 1916, the eldest son in a family of five sons and four daughters, born to Arthur and Mary Tait. After finishing school, he worked for various farmers and then joined the Army in the fall of 1942. He served until June 1946 in England, France, Belgium and Germany. Bill married Lillian Cartier on November 14, 1946, and raised a family of two boys and two girls. In 1972, he passed away suddenly in a traffic accident. SWANSTON, Victor WWI Victor enlisted in the World War I in August 1914, and served with the 1st Canadian Contingent in both the 16th Light Horse and the 5th Battalion. In 1918, he was gassed while serving in Germany, and was discharged in February 1919. He returned to civilian life and purchased land through the Soldiers Settlement Board.
