LEST WE FORGET 307 SUTTON, Arthur William WWII Arthur was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, on August 27, 1920. He enlisted with the RCNVR Naval British Aircraft Carriers on September 22, 1939. After training, in 1943, he served on Squadron 1830 HMS Saker, Squadron 1830 HMS Blackcap, and Squadron 1830 HMS Industrious. He was recommended for the Victoria Cross but the award was denied because it was not determined that he was alive and in control of the aircraft in the final moments of the attack destroying Japanese aircraft. Arthur passed away on January 24, 1945. SVENDSEN, Harry WWII Harry was born in Brovst, Denmark, in 1916. He joined the Army with the C.I.R.U. from March 5, 1942 to February 14, 1946, and served as an “Officer’s Batman” in Canada and England tending to their equipment, shoes, medals, etc., and also doing their chauffeuring. Harry passed away in 1976. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Canwood Branch 132. SVENDSEN, George WWII George was born in Brovst, Denmark, in 1921. He enlisted in the Army in Saskatoon and was sent to Calgary for training. He got scarlet fever, which takes a long time to recover, and was sent to Shilo and got sick again, taking a longer time to recover. He took extra training in Winnipeg and Hamilton, before being sent to Nova Scotia and then to England, serving in Belgium and the Netherlands. When the war was over, he worked in the kitchen until he came back to Saskatchewan. After his discharge, he farmed for thirty years before retiring to British Columbia. He passed away in 2000.
