LEST WE FORGET 299 STEELE, Gordon Canavan WWII Gordon was born in Expanse, Saskatchewan, on June 4, 1917. He enlisted in the Army in Saskatoon, SK, on December 16, 1942, at the age of 25, serving in France, Germany and Holland. He began his service driving Army tanks, and later became a chauffeur to the higher-ranking officers. He received the 19391945 Star, the France and Germany Star, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. Following the war, Gordon returned home and married Reta Walker of Hawarden in 1951, and they raised two children: Loretta and Colin. Gordon passed away on April 22, 1989. STEVENSON, Harold WWII Harold was born in 1919, one of a set of twins born to Rud and Ida (Newton) Stevenson on the New England district. Harold and his twin brother, Howard, both worked up north at Swanson and Chesley mill after leaving school, as well as working for local farmers. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1942 and spent the rest of the war years overseas. Harold and his brother started a garage business in Manville, AB, after the war. Harold became ill with multiple sclerosis and had to give up his share of the business so he returned home in 1951 and spent his time there at University Hospital until he passed away in 1968. STEFFENSON, Allan Henry WWII Allan was born near Le Roy, Saskatchewan, on May 3, 1922. In 1941, he and his brother, Hardy, were called in the Army at the same time. Allan was posted from Cape Breton Island to Vancouver Island and then went overseas on the ship Amsterdam arriving in Scotland and serving with the Regina Rifles 3rd Division as a gunner. He was stationed in England and fought the Germans in Belgium, France and Germany. He was in a barn in Emden, Germany, when the war was over and he did guard duty in Utrecht, Holland. After returning on the ship Queen Elizabeth and on to Ontario by train, he signed up to go fight the Japanese but the war with them was soon over so he didn’t go. He returned to Le Roy in early 1946 and farmed for many years, first at Le Roy, then Buchanan, and eventually moving to Yorkton, where he worked several years as a night auditor in a hotel. He had four children. Allan passed away on April 14, 2001.
