LEST WE FORGET 295 SMITH, Donald James WWII Flying Officer (No. 295 Squadron RAF pilot) Donald James Smith, born in 1922, of Naicam died on May 16, 1943, and is buried at St. Mary Churchyard, Bransgore, Hampshire, England. Smith’s Halifax crashed northeast of Sopley on a non-combat flight. He was the son of James and Rose (Rich) Smith who came from Souldrop, Bedfordshire, England to homestead SE15-40-19-W2 west of Naicam. Don was educated at Byng school, Naicam and Saskatoon Tech and was taking an aircraft mechanics course when he enlisted in Saskatoon in 1941. His brother Leonard and Joseph served in the Army and the Royal Canadian Air Force respectively. SMITH, Percy Charles William WWI Percy was born in 1897. He joined the K.R.R. Corps Imperial in March 1915, and served in France. He was discharged in March 1927 and received the 1914-1915 Star, the General Service Medal, and the Victory Medal. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Earl Grey Branch 137. SMITH, Norman Elmer WWII Norman was born in Birch Hills on September 28, 1916, son of James Henry and Mary Victoria Smith. He had all of his schooling in the Iranistan and Lake Park schools. After school, he worked for other farmers and in the winter, he did a lot of trapping. Norman married Ruby McKinnon on October 11, 1940. In January 1943, he was called to the Army in Regina and was later transferred to Petawawa, ON. He drove in the Service Corps because of a knee injury. After the war, he went farming and he and Ruby raised four children. Norman passed away in 2003 and is buried in St. Saviours Cemetery beside his parents and three of his brothers.
