LEST WE FORGET 271 SATHER, Kristen WWII Kristen was born in Norway in 1910. He joined the Army, serving in Canada. He passed away in 2001. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Canwood Branch 132 for 40 years. SAXTON, Alfred Ernest “Alf” WWII Alfred was born in Leifer, Manitoba, on November 26, 1924. He joined the Canadian Army in October 1943 and served in the Medical Corps in Canada, the United Kingdom and Continental Europe. His hospital unit was in Holland when the war ended. He was discharged in August 1946, and married Alena Swan and they farmed at Demaine, SK, and raised seven children until his passing on September 24, 2008. Alf was a loyal member of The Royal Canadian Legion Beechy Branch 324 for 47 years. He was Sgt-at-Arms for seven years, Secretary-Treasurer for thirteen years and 2nd Vice President for one year. He was awarded the Certificate of Merit by his grateful comrades in 2006. Alf loved playing cribbage and his team played in The Legion Provincial Playoffs a number of times. SAVAGE, Gordon Trotter WWII Gordon was born in 1921 inYoungstown, Alberta. He started his military career in 1940 with the Prince Albert and Battleford Volunteers. In August 1941, he received his discharge from the army reserve and promptly enlisted in the Navy. He served primarily as gunner’s mate aboard the Corvette HMCS Chambly, a ship on escort duty in the North Atlantic. In 1944, he was transferred to the HMCS Minas, a minesweeper active off the coast of Normandy. He spent DDay in the English Channel clearing the way for American troops at Omaha Beach. Gordon passed away on November 11, 2008.
