LEST WE FORGET 263 RUPERT, Earl WWII Earl was born in Melfort, Saskatchewan on September 4, 1922. He enlisted in Prince Albert straight out of high school, the day before Canada declared war. He was wounded by an enemy artillery shell at Valguarnera. Sergeant Earl Rupert (Saskatoon Light Infantry) died on July 20, 1943 of his wounds and is buried at Agira Canadian War Cemetery in Enna, Sicily, Italy. He was the son of Roy and May Rupert. See page 367 for a poem dedicated to Sgt. Earl Rupert written by Sgt. W. A. McKay titled The Ones That Know. RUSK, Joseph “Joe” WWII Joe was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, on August 17, 1919. He joined the Army in April 1941, serving with the 110th Battery, 15 Field Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He returned to Canada in November 1945, and received his discharge on January 7, 1946. In June of 1964, Joe married Kay Hreneyk, a registered nurse in Samburn, SK. In December 1966, they went to Los Angeles and settled in San Diego, California. Joe and Kay later returned to British Columbia and in 1980 bought land and built a home in Stump Lake, SK. Both Joe and Kay were active in the Seventh Day Adventist Church. He passed away on January 4, 2003. RUSK, David Graydon WWII David was born in 1923 on his grandparents’ farm. He joined the Army in 1941 and went overseas in 1942, spending two-and-a-half years in England and one year in France, Holland, and Germany with the Montreal Black Watch Regiment. He was wounded in Germany in April 1945, and was discharged from the Army in 1946. In December 1949, he married Mary Brickson from Cookson and raised three boys: Raymond, Brian and Garry. He loved the farm and his family. David passed away from cancer in 1990, and Mary passed away in 2004.
