LEST WE FORGET 237 PORTER, James Robert WWI James Robert Porter was working on a farm near Bounty, Saskatchewan when he enlisted in Winnipeg on July 12, 1915, at the age of 25. Born on October 10, 1890, he was the son of Thomas Porter of Inch Island, Donegal County, Ireland. Corporal Porter was a member of the Canadian Infantry, 13th Battalion. He sailed from Halifax on the SS Laplandon April 24, 1916. Ninety-eight days later, he found himself in France as a member of the 13th Battalion. On the first day of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, April 9, 1917, he was killed in the trenches southeast of Neuville-Saint-Vaast, 3.2 kilometres south of the famous Canadian War Memorial at Vimy Ridge. His name is inscribed on the base of the Vimy Memorial, along with the names of 11,284 of his comrades who do not have a known grave. PTOLEMY, Jesse Fraser WWI Jesse was born in Markdale, Ontario, on April 15, 1896. He enlisted with the 1st Depot Battalion Saskatchewan Regiment on July 10, 1918, and served in Canada. He was discharged on November 12, 1919, and returned to farm in Saskatchewan. He married in 1927 and raised four daughters. He retired in 1963 in Dinsmore and passed away on October 22, 1979. POULTON, Alan Ronald WWII Alan was born in Saskatchewan in 1925 and enlisted with the First Armoured Car Battery Canadian Armoured Corps serving in England and Sicily. He was killed in action in Sicily in 1943.
