LEST WE FORGET 233 PONTIUS, Jacob “George” WWII George was born on September 21, 1924, in the Osage area. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force on November 1, 1943 and trained at Fort Erie, ON as an aircraft assembly mechanic. He served in the military, but did not go overseas. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Canadian War Medal. George was discharged in 1946. George passed away on December 25, 1991, at the age of 67 years. PONTO, Archie Raymond WWII Archie was born on April 13, 1904, in Elkwood, North Dakota and came to Canada in 1911. He attended Gordon School near Hardy, Saskatchewan and Ceylon School. He worked on several farms. He married in January 1927 and they tried to farm in Hardy district in the Dirty Thirties. They moved the farmhouse into Hardy in 1940. In May 1940, Archie joined the Army with the 25th Field Coy, Royal Canadian Engineers to serve during World War II. He went first to Prince Albert, Chilliwack BC and Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. He went overseas in May 1944, returned in December 1945, and was discharged on February 7, 1946. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and the Defence of Britain Medal 1939-1945. On February 7, 1946, he was sent to Fort San as he had tuberculosis and he spent a number of years there and one year in Saskatoon San where he had several operations including one to remove one of his lungs. He was discharged from Fort San on May 21, 1953 and they purchased a wartime house in Regina. Archie worked at a few jobs and he joined The Royal Canadian Legion Regina Branch 1. While at Fort San they had set up the Tuberculosis Veterans Service and he continued to work with that all his life. On December 30, 1963, he was appointed Sergeant-At-Arms at the Saskatchewan Legislature Assembly until 1965. Then reappointed in 1971 until he retired on May 15, 1981. He had two sons and two daughters. Archie passed away in Regina in April 1984.
