LEST WE FORGET 223 PENNY, Douglas Richard WWII Doug was born on December 22, 1923, near Abernethy, Saskatchewan. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941, and served as an air gunner primarily with the 432nd Squadron. He flew 36 missions, mostly in Halifax bombers and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal (D.E.M.) in October 1944 for shooting down a Junkers 88 and a ME 109. Doug was commissioned and returned to Canada in April 1945. He retired from active duty as a Flight Lieutenant. He married Ellen Jackson of Loreburn, SK, on October 8, 1949. He was active with the air crews and air gunners, serving as National President of the air gunners. Doug was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion for more than sixty years before he passed away on February 9, 2007. PENNYCOOK, Elmer WWII His parents, William and Janet, moved to Saskatchewan in 1907 with their family of three boys and four girls in the Nealdale District. Elmer was born in 1914 and the family attended Jensen school. Elmer was the younger brother of Bob. He joined the Canadian Provost Corps and was a Lance Corporal. Elmer was killed on May 1, 1944 and is buried at Moro River Canadian War Cemetery, Ortona, Italy. Pennycook Lake in Northern Saskatchewan was named in his memory. PENNY, Robert “Allen” WWII Robert was born in Abernethy, Saskatchewan, on November 30, 1918. He enlisted in Regina on November 20, 1940, and was posted all over Canada and the Aleutians. He joined the aircrew and had just received his wings when the war ended. He was released on November 15, 1945. He joined The Royal Canadian Legion in Abernethy in 1944, and had a 57-year pin. His last membership was with the Mt. Arrow Branch #49 in Parkville, BC. Robert passed away on July 7, 2001.
