LEST WE FORGET 213 NIESMAN, Gordon Frederick WWII Gordon was born on the home farm in Ardill, Saskatchewan, on September 21, 1923. He enlisted with the #12 District Depot of the Air Force on April 9, 1942, and served in the UK and Continental Europe. He was discharged on December 6, 1945, and received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, and Defence Medal. In 1945, the town of Mossbank honoured all Veterans who served in World War II. In 2003, they received a citation from the Dutch Government commemorating the 60th Anniversary. Gordon passed away on June 19, 2003. NISHIMURA, Sannosuke “Sam” WWI Sam was born in 1897 in Kobe, Japan. He enlisted with the Army and served with the 15th Battalion, Canadian Infantry, Central Ontario Regiment overseas with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in England. He received the 1914-1915 Star, the British War Medal and the Memorial Cross for his service. Sam passed away in 1919 and is buried in Ripon Cemetery in Yorkshire, England. NIKIRK, Charles Edward WWII Charles Edward Nikirk, the son of Julia May and Charles Marvin Nikirk, was born on June 14, 1917, in Borden, Saskatchewan. He had four brothers and two sisters. He moved with his family to Maidstone in 1936. Charles was single and working on a farm near Bounty, Saskatchewan when he enlisted in Saskatoon on July 4, 1940. Corporal Nikirk served with the Canadian Armoured Corps. He left Halifax on November 12, 1941 and arrived in England on November 22. He was killed in action near Melfa, Italy on May 24, 1944, at the age of 26. At the time, he was serving with the Royal Canadian Lord Strathcona’s Horse Armoured Corps. His father Charles received the tragic news in a letter from Major-General H. F. G. Letson, dated June 17, 1944. He was pre-deceased by his mother Julia and survived by four brothers and two sisters. A Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp in his honour was received by his sister Mrs. Adelle Ward of Bounty. Corporal Nikirk was also awarded the Italy Star Defense Medal. He is buried at Cassino War Cemetery, Frosinone, Italy.
