The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 95 BUTLER, Frederick WWI Frederick enlisted in 1914 with the 229th Battalion in Moose Jaw. He also served with the 46th Canadian Battalion serving in Belgium, France and England. He was wounded and sent to England to recuperate after which the war was over. BYGRAVE, G. Donald “Don” WWII Don was born in Davidson, Saskatchewan in 1917. He enlisted as a pilot in Regina on July 12, 1941 at the age of 22 and took his basic training there but when they discovered his excellent in mathematics skills, they transferred him to train as a navigator. He went overseas in the fall of 1941 and was stationed at Biggin-Hill, Kent Base in England where he met his future wife. With Squadron 426, he made numerous missions over Germany and the Blue Danube where one night they lost their tail gunner and assistant gunner, but the rest made it safely back to England. Later, Don was sent to Egypt and Italy for combat duty and also suffered a knee injury for which it took some time to recover. He received the Italy Star, the Air Crew Europe Star Medal, the 1939-45 Star, the Medal for Voluntary Military Service and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Bar. Flight Lieutenant Bygrave was discharged in Regina on November 16, 1945. Don has been a member of Davidson Legion Branch 51 for twenty-two years. CAIRNS, Owen Robert WWII Owen was born on March 12, 1918. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in April 1941 and served as ground crew until his discharge in 1944. Owen passed away on May 16, 1995.
