The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 471 WAGNER, John WWII John was born in Regina, Saskatchewan in 1920. He trained at Shilo, Manitoba then served with the Regina Rifles in Europe, including France. He went to war on D-Day, became a POW, but didn’t talk about his time during the war. He returned home to farm and he has been a member of Cupar Legion Branch 217. WALTON (NORTHROP), Winifred Gertrude WWI Winifred was born in Dalton-le-Dale, Durham, England on December 7, 1897 and was educated in Surrey, England. She served in the Women’s Legion Royal Army Service Corps where she drove an ambulance in France from 1918 to 1919. Winifred came to Canada later in 1919 and in 1921, married Harry Northrop in Kenlens Plains, Saskatchewan with whom she had a family of five children. She moved around as Harry did odd jobs until becoming employed with Saskatchewan Wheat Pool in Stalwart in the 1930s. They retired to Imperial in the 1960s and then in 1971, moved to Davidson where she resided until her passing in April 1989. WARREN, Meryl Ernest WWII Meryl was born in 1920 in Saskatoon and grew up on a farm near Lucky Lake, Saskatchewan. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942 and was posted to Sea Island, near Vancouver, as an Aero engine mechanic. He was discharged in January 1946 and eventually settled near Girvin, Saskatchewan with his wife and young daughter. He raised five children with his wife Hattie and farmed until his retirement in 1991. Meryl has been a member of Davidson Legion Branch 51 for fifty years.
