The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 461 THOMPSON, Stanley Lewis WWII Stanley was born on May 24, 1920 in Davidson, Saskatchewan. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and was eventually posted to Squadron 401 in England. Stanley’s Spitfire airplane was shot down on October 27, 1941 while returning from a raid over Europe. Failing to clear the Cliffs of Dover, Flight Sergeant Thompson bailed out but his parachute failed to open and he did not survive the fall. Stanley is buried in the Brookwood Cemetery in Surrey, England. THOMPSON, Warren Stanley WWI Warren was born on June 14, 1874 in Lakefield, Ontario. He enlisted as a veterinarian in World War I and served with the Royal Army Veterinary Corps. After taking a load of horses to France, he was stationed in Egypt where he became extremely ill from the heat and an illness known as Infective Endocarditis. After a prolonged wait, he was transferred to England where he died on September 2, 1919 at Cambridge Hospital in Aldershot, Hampshire. Captain Thompson’s body was returned to Canada and was buried in the Del-Win Cemetery in Deloraine, Manitoba. THOMSON, John Alexander “Al” PEACETIME Al was born in 1932 in Simpson, Saskatchewan. He joined the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and served in Canada. Al married Jean Pearson in Regina on May 5, 1952 and they resided in Nokomis for a while then in Saskatoon, Coleville and Swift Current. They had two children. Al worked for the Saskatchewan Power Corporation until his retirement in 1987. After Jean’s passing, he married Di Andrews and they resided in Swift Current until his death in 2011. Al was a member of Swift Current Legion Branch 56 for thirty-two years.
