The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 413 ROY, David Joseph L. WWII David was born in March 1912 in Dollard, Saskatchewan. He joined the Army in June 1941 and served in England with the 1st Battalion, Regina Rifle Regiment. He spent 45 months overseas in the United Kingdom before being discharged in August 1945. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. David’s older brother Louis served in World War I and his younger brother André served in World War II. David passed away in 1979. ROY, Louis WWI Louis was born in 1896 in Mariapolis, Manitoba and he moved to Dollard, Saskatchewan in 1910 in a caravan. He joined the Army and served in Europe during World War I. His brothers, André and David, served in World War II. Louis died of a sun stroke in 1920 at the age of 23. ROY, Louis WWII Louis was born on August 2, 1920 at Île-à-la-Crosse, Saskatchewan. He joined the Saskatoon Light Infantry on February 25, 1942 and trained in Saskatoon, Camrose and Winnipeg before being sent to Halifax where he boarded a ship to Europe. Private Roy was in Glasgow, Scotland then eventually Dover where he did guard duty for a year and a half. He next fought on the front lines in Central Italy, with the Americans on the western side and the British to the east. Experiencing hearing loss due to the close range gunfire and bombings, Louis was sent to a hospital in Britain in 1945 where he recovered until the end of the war. He was discharged in Regina on October 9, 1945 and returned home where he trapped and fished at surrounding lakes. He married, raised a family and established a homestead along the Beaver River near Beauval. Louis retired in 1985 after an 18-year career as a carpenter. He was the only living WWII Métis veteran in Northern Saskatchewan in 2013 at the age of 93.
