The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 407 RINGGUTH, Cecil Herman WWII Cecil was born on December 14, 1921. He enlisted in the Army in 1940 and served as Gunner on a tank in Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, Belgium and Holland. Cecil returned to Canada in 1946. He passed away in 1978. ROBERT, Joseph Lucien WWII Joseph was born in 1922 in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan and he served with the Essex Scottish Regiment, 1st Division in Canada, Britain and Northwest Europe. He was a sniper in France and Germany for two years before he became a German POW after stopping to help a fellow soldier. He escaped once but was re-captured. The Germans tortured him and locked him in a hot box where he was rescued barely alive by the French underground. He spent a long time in hospital in England and while recovering, he was invited for tea with the Queen Mother at Windsor Palace. Missing in action and presumed dead, his family didn’t expect to have him arrive home late one night. The following morning, his sister fainted when she saw him, his brother kept saying he knew he’d come home and his father shed a lot of tears. It was hard talking about the war and dealing with the nightmares and memories of what he’d seen. He was awarded the Medal of Honour from King George VI in 1945. RODGERS, Dave WWII Dave was born in Raphoe, Northern Ireland in 1916 and came to Canada with his parents, six brothers and one sister in 1924. Another sister was born in Canada. They farmed at Handsworth, Saskatchewan. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served in England and Europe during World War II. When he returned from overseas, he moved to Choiceland, Saskatchewan and farmed there after clearing some land. He died in 1986.
