The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 377 NORMAN, Franklin WWII Franklin was born sometime between 1913 and 1920 in the Rensby School District, east of Elbow. The family later moved to the Reber district south of Davidson, then to land east of Davidson across the Arm River. They eventually moved to town. Franklin attended Briercrest Bible College in Caronport and was very involved in founding what became known as the Gospel Assembly Church. In the summers between 1935 and the start of World War II, Franklin and Cecil Coward traveled many miles in hot weather contacting school boards for use of country schools and inviting parents to send their children to Vacation Bible School. He enlisted to serve in the Second World War and was killed in action while overseas. NORTHROP, John Samuel “Sam” WWII Sam was born in Indian Head, Saskatchewan in September 1921. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942 and wanted to be a rear gunner. However, that was not to be and he did Morse code work instead. Sam never went overseas but did travel in Canada from coast to coast, spending some time in Whitehorse. When he left the Air Force, he took up farming cattle and grain at Salwart with his father Henry. In 1951, he married Joyce Mooney from Imperial and they had four children. In 1956, Sam purchased land in the Liberty district and continued to farm until he retired to Davidson in 1988. In Sam’s retirement years, he enjoyed his music and became involved as a coordinator for seniors. Sam was a member of Liberty Legion Branch 261 and Davidson Legion Branch 51 for a total of thirty-seven years before he passed away in January 2008. NORTON, George Oliver WWII George was born north of Carnduff in 1920. He joined the Army in the spring of 1942 and served in Canada with the South Saskatchewan Regiment during World War II. He became ill and was discharged without going overseas. George passed away in 1992.
