The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 257 JOHNSON, Curtis WWII Curtis was born on July 17, 1917 in Domremy, Saskatchewan. He enlisted during World War II but the record provides no dates, only saying that he served in the Army in wartime Europe. Curtis married and joined the Legion at Wakaw, Saskatchewan then transferred to Nutana Legion Branch 362 in December 1994. JOHNSON, Ernest Axel WWII Ernest was born in Davidson, Saskatchewan on May 10, 1919. He volunteered to serve in World War II and enlisted on June 9, 1942 at the age of 23 with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps. He served overseas as part of the Winnipeg Light Infantry and was stationed near London driving army trucks and transporting supplies as well as wounded soldiers. During the invasion of Normandy, he transported wounded soldiers to hospitals. Corporal Johnson received his discharge on March 19, 1946 and returned to Davidson. He farmed and got married, spending the rest of his life in Davidson. On November 11, 1988, Ernest received the Legion Meritorious Service Medal for his dedication to the Legion and Davidson Branch 51 where he was a member for forty-six years. He was also awarded a Life membership. Ernest passed away in 2002. JOHNSTON, Jack WWII Jack was born in Governor. He joined the Army and served with the 6th Canadian Field Regiment and the 3rd Medium Regiment in France, England and Germany. When he arrived overseas, he trained and competed in the Canadian Army Boxing Championships. Jack won the Canadian Army welterweight title in 1940 and 1942. For four years, he was at the top of his weight class until the invasion of Normandy began in June 1944. Jack then entered the war on July 5, 1944 in France as part of a 5.5 inch Howitzer crew. After the battle in Caen, Jack’s Artillery Company followed the Canadian advance throughout Normandy. Jack was shot in the wrist on August 18, 1944 while Allied Forces were attempting to close the Falaise Gap. After recovering in England, he returned to war to take part in the battle of the Scheldt and fought all the way to Germany. Discharged on January 8, 1946, Jack married Theresa in 1952 and they had two daughters. He was postmaster in Cadillac for over twenty-five years. Jack passed away from a heart condition.
