The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 247 HUNTER, James “Alvin” WWII Alvin was born on August 30, 1920 in Govan, Saskatchewan. He joined the Army in Regina in January 1942 and trained in Trenton, Ontario. He was with the 1st Canadian Tank Corps, Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, and shipped out to Europe, first landing in England and then into Sicily. His division continued through Sicily to Italy towards the Adriatic Sea, encountering heavy fighting at Ortona and at the battle of Monte Cassino. Before entering into Germany, Alvin contracted malaria and was hospitalized and then transported back to England to recover. He remained in England to help with cleanup efforts post-war 1945. Alvin returned to Govan, married and raised a family of four children. He farmed in the Govan area all his life, had a passion for the farm and was very involved in community, church and the Legion. He was active in the Govan Legion Branch 257 for more than fifty years. In his last years, he was a member of Regina Legion Branch 1. Alvin died in Regina on January 8, 2004. HUNTER, Kenneth Douglas WWII Kenneth was born in Govan, Saskatchewan on November 11, 1918. He enlisted in 1940 with the Royal Canadian Air Force, City of Edmonton Squadron # 418, with the classification of Leading Aircraftman. After completing his tour of duty in England, he returned to Govan and farmed until he passed away in July 1970. He was a member of Govan Legion Branch 257. HURL, Frederick Lloyd WWII Frederick enlisted in the Army and served in Canada with the 12th District Depot, C.A.A.F. Regina. Due to health reasons, he was never assigned to active duty but was willing to serve his country.
