The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 231 HETLAND, Orville Orlando WWII Orville was born on March 27, 1924 in Spalding, Saskatchewan. He enlisted in 1943, trained in Regina and Woodstock, Ontario, and arrived in England on New Year’s Eve 1945. By February, he was on the firing lines in Germany. In 1945, two days after his 21st birthday, Orville was seriously wounded while on the banks of the Rhine along with three others, including the Sergeant who lost his legs. They were airlifted to England where he was in convalescence until VE Day. Orville was engaged in mop-up operations in England and returned to Canada in June 1946. A month later, on July 22, he married Ruth Vigrass. Orville was a farmer and he purchased his land through the V.L.A. One quarter he purchased had been bought by his maternal grandfather in 1910. Today, his son owns this land. Orville became Chairman of the Spalding Hospital Board, then Councillor and Reeve of the Spalding Rural Municipality. He passed away on December 13, 1974 at the age of 50. He had been a member of Spalding Legion Branch 348. HOCKLEY, Albert Rodolph WWI Albert was born in 1894 in Hawley, Minnesota, U.S.A. He joined the Army during World War I and served in England. Albert was a member of Yellow Grass Legion Branch 266 for a number of years before he passed away in 1980. HOCKLEY, L. J. “Jack” WWII Jack was born in the Yellow Grass area in 1926. He joined the Canadian Army during World War II, served with Pacific Command and was honourably discharged in Regina in April 1946. Jack has been a member of Maple Creek Legion Branch 75 for thirty years.
