He enlisted in the Canadian Army on April 3, 1942 in Brantford, Ontario and was discharged on January 11, 1946. During that time, he served in England and Continental Europe with the Canadian Infantry Corps (RHLI) and received the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. According to his records, he was invited to a ball (dance) for members of the 2nd Canadian Division who took part in the fighting in the Dieppe District, both in 1942 and 1944. John put in a total of 1,373 days of service and received $788.39 as his pay. After his discharge, he came back to his home in Govan to take over his dad’s farm and raise a family.
