The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 165 DOVELL, Wilbur WWII Wilbur was born in Webb, Saskatchewan in 1917 and grew up in Eastend. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941 and completed gunnery training in February of 1943. He soon became a member of the RCAF 426 Thunderbird Squadron and was based at Linton-on-House in England. Wilbur flew in Lancaster and Halifax bombers as the mid-upper gunner on many bombing raids. His keen eye was credited with keeping the crew alive on many of the trips. He was awarded the Operational Wings of the RCAF and finished his commission as a Pilot Officer on February 9, 1945. He didn’t return to Eastend and married Elizabeth Robinson. They had three children and farmed together for over 50 years. Wilbur was a member of Eastend Legion Branch for around fifty years before he passed away in 2002. DOWLAND, Arthur Stephan WWI Arthur was born in England in 1893 and traveled to Nadeauville on February 11, 1914. He was a farmer when he enlisted with the first Canadian Mounted Rifles in Maple Creek on January 2, 1915. He served in France for the next year and a half until approximately May 6, 1916 when she was reported missing near Maple Copse. He was presumed dead and his body was never recovered. His brother William, also served in the war, filed a patent for homestead in his brother’s name on November 18, 1919. Arthur’s name is inscribed on the Menin Gate Memorial in France and on the Nadeauville Monument. DOYLE, Chester WWII Chester was born on October 4, 1919. He joined the Royal Canadian Artillery in 1940 and served until his discharge in 1945. Chester passed away on August 9, 2009.
