The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 103 CARDIFF, John Abel “Jack” WWII Jack was born on October 21, 1923 in Govan, Saskatchewan. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in October 1941 and trained as a pilot and wireless operator before going to England in July 1943 as a Sergeant wireless operator. He trained flying the Wellington bomber and the Halifax heavy bomber. Jack was posted to 77 Squadron at Elington, Yorkshire. His crew completed 42 operational trips over enemy territory, tours completed on March 6, 1945. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross. Jack returned home to Govan to farm, married and had two children. Later, the family relocated to Regina where he began a career with the Farm Credit Corp. Over the years, they resided in Prince Albert, Saskatoon, Regina and Kelowna where he retired. Jack played an active role in many Legion branches throughout the years. He held executive positions and took an advocate role representing the veterans. Jack had been a Legion member for more than fifty years in Govan, Regina, Saskatoon, Prince Albert and Kelowna before he passed away on December 27, 2010 in Kelowna, BC. CARLSON, Arnold Bernard WWII Arnold was born in Pleasantdale, Saskatchewan on July 31, 1918. He joined the Army and served as a Private in Canada until 1944 when he was given a compassionate discharge because of the death of his brother, Flight Sergeant Elmer Carlson on September 12, 1944. Arnold was a member of Pleasantdale Legion Branch 227 before he passed away on November 6, 1976. CARLSON, Elmer Kenneth WWII Elmer was born in 1925 in Pleasantdale, Saskatchewan. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served as a Flight Sergeant in Canada, then in England. He was a tail gunner in a bomber that was shot down over Germany in August 1944. Elmer was buried in Germany.
