The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 77 COOK, George WWI George came from Quebec to Meacham, Saskatchewan to homestead in the York area. He was on Meacham’s first Village Council in 1912. George joined the Army and served in World War I. COPPENS, Lionel WWII Lionel was born in Wimmer, Saskatchewan in 1921. He joined the Army and served with the Lake Superior Regiment in Canada, England, France, Holland, Belgium, and Germany. He married, had three children and retired in Saskatoon. Lionel was a member of Quill Lake Legion Branch 37 for sixty years. He died in 2006 and is buried in Quill Lake Cemetery. COWLEY, Paul WWI & WWII Paul was born in London, England on October 8, 1886. During WWI, he joined the Canadian Expeditionary Forces and served as a Corporal with the 28th Battalion of the Canadian Infantry in Canada, Great Britain, Germany, Belgium, and France where he was injured by a land mine planted in a trench. Buried in the resulting explosion, only one foot was exposed. A German soldier saw his foot, rescued him, and Paul spent the next three years in a German prisoner of war camp. Liberated in 1918, Paul came to Canada to farm in the Twin Creek area near Quill Lake, Saskatchewan. At the onset of WWII, he enlisted again and spent the war years as a prisoner of war guard in Alberta. Paul died on November 14, 1972.
