The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 53 BINDING, Alfred “Alf” WWI Alfred was born on January 27, 1892 in Seaworthy, Somerset County, England. He joined the British Army on March 11, 1914, trained in India then served as a Private with the 5th Battalion Somerset Light Infantry in the Palestine campaign. After his discharge on May 1, 1919, he went back to Cotford Farm in England and in 1920, came to Canada where he farmed in the Viscount/ Meacham area. Alf and his wife, Catherine Korkowski, raised three children. He also worked for the Department of Highways for a few years, helped build chimneys in the district and helped with butchering. In later years, gardening was a favourite hobby. Prior to joining Viscount Legion Branch 271, he belonged to the Saskatoon Legion. Alfred died on December 19, 1965. BLACKWELL (nee ROBERTS), Kathleen WWII Kathleen was born in Viscount, SK. She attended school there then went on to become a nurse’s aide, working at T.B. hospitals at Fort San and Saskatoon, SK. She then enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and served with the Medical Corps. Her brothers, Stanley and John Roberts, also served in the RCAF. After her discharge, Kathleen remained at her profession in Vancouver, BC where she lived with her husband, Arthur Blackwell, and their two children. BLOCH, Willys Roland WWII Willys was born on October 12, 1919 in Viscount, SK where he also took his schooling. When he was young, he helped his dad around the car dealership then in 1931, he moved to Saskatoon, SK with his parents, John and Clara Bloch, before going on to Vancouver, BC. Willys joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served as a Flying Officer with the 429th Squadron. On November 26, 1943, Willys was shot down over France. He is buried in the Carignan Communal Cemetery at Carignan, France, one of seven airmen buried there.
