The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 423 VEITCH, Robert WWI Robert was born to George Veitch on January 28, 1886 in Rochorigh, Scotland. He was a clerk from Bruno, Saskatchewan when he signed up on in Saskatoon, SK on December 26, 1914. Robert served overseas in World War I as a Lieutenant Colonel with the 9th Regiment of the Canadian Mounted Rifles. VERES, Stephen John “Steve” WWII Steve was born on December 23, 1923 in Plunkett, SK and was the only living child of Alex and Rose Veres, homesteaders in the Plunkett area in 1908. Growing up, he worked on the farm and attended the Plunkett and Badger schools. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force on November 8, 1942 and served as a Flight Sergeant with No. 356 Squadron RAF as a Wireless Operator/Air Gunner instead of as a pilot, due to his eyesight. Steve’s Liberator was bombing Japanese troop concentrations at Alugale when it burst into flames and crashed west of Laung Chaung, Maya Peninsula, Myanmar (Burma). He died on June 12, 1945 and was buried at Taukkyan War Cemetery, Rangoon, Burma. A geomemorial in Saskatchewan was named in his honour: Veres Lake, southeast of Lloyd Lake, at (74F2) 57o 04’ 108o 35’. VOTH, Elmer Jacob “Shorty” WWII Shorty was born in Rosthern, SK on December 18, 1919. He came to Viscount, SK about 1937 and worked on Isaacson’s threshing crew. He then returned to Langham, Saskatchewan, where he enlisted in the Army in 1940. After his discharge in 1944, he returned to Langham and then went back to Viscount where he worked for farmers in the area until his death in September 1971.
