The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 403 SYROTEUK, John WWII John was born in Plunkett, Saskatchewan on July 27, 1922. He took his schooling at Badger School and worked on the family farm before enlisting in the Army in 1943 to serve in World War II. After training in various parts of British Columbia, he went overseas in July 1943 and returned to Victoria, BC in 1944. After the war, he worked at various jobs in British Columbia and Manitoba before farming south of Humboldt, SK. He married Alice Merkosky and they raised eight children. John served on the local Parish Council, the School Board, the Wheat Pool committee and was councilor of the Rural Municipality of Wolverine. TALLON, Esther Mary WWII Esther was born on May 18, 1922 in Viscount, Saskatchewan. She took her early schooling in Viscount and went to high school at Sacred Heart in Regina, SK. She joined the Canadian Women’s Army Corps on March 25, 1942 and served in Canada and England. She was awarded the Defence Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. After her discharge on June 26, 1946, she was appointed postmistress of Viscount, a post she held until her retirement in 1964. Esther became a member of Viscount Legion Branch271 in 1947 and is a life member. She received her 50-year Service Medal and a Certificate of Merit and was past secretary/treasurer and past president. TAYLOR, Harry (J. H.) WWI Harry was born in England but he came to Canada in the fall of 1914 with his mother. That same year, he enlisted in Lanigan and served in the Army in World War I. His twin, Billy, also enlisted. After his discharge in 1916, he worked at Quaker Oats before setting out to homestead in Plunkett, SK in 1922. Harry died on November 1, 1942.
