The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 395 STENSRUD, Roy Vernon WWII Roy was born on January 23, 1921 in Meacham, SK where he went to school and was raised on the family farm. His three siblings, Lillie, Wally and Merle, enlisted to serve in World War II, as well as his brother-in-law, Harvey Potts. Roy volunteered for service and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1939 and was stationed for several years at Flying School Operations in Bella Bella, British Columbia. He was on the rescue squad for aircraft, always ready with his knife or axe. Roy was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the Fire Fighter Medal 1945-1949 for service and rescue. After his discharge in 1945, he became a longshoreman in Vancouver, BC, where he lived until he retired and passed away in 1992. Roy raised two children with his wife, LaVerna Burns. STENSRUD, Wallace Mansel “Wally” WWII Wallace was born in Meacham, Saskatchewan on February 8, 1922. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1939 and served in Germany during World War II. Honourably discharged in 1945, he received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the NATO Medal 1947-49 for serving in Germany. After the war, Wallace went into the Reserves and rejoined the Air Force, attaining the rank of Sergeant. After 6-7 years in Germany, he retired to enjoy the life of a civilian, living in Saskatchewan, British Columbia and Alberta for several years. His final home was at Airdrie, AB where he died in 2003. Wallace married Marjory Digby and raised two children. STEPTOE, Sydney Thomas WWI Sydney was born to John Thomas Steptoe on August 18, 1895 in Lewisham, Kent, England. He had applied for a homestead at Guernsey on September 13, 1915 and then moved to the Badger district, north of Plunkett, SK. He was single when he joined the Army in Humboldt, SK on March 10, 1916 and served as a Private with the 46th Overseas Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, Canadian Infantry, Saskatchewan Regiment. Sydney was killed in action on August 20, 1917 and he is commemorated on the Vimy Memorial located at Pas de Calais, France. He gave his homestead to his father upon his death.
